Goddamn Big Media Sloppiness

Who's doing the fact checking for Fox News? They just described the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kennedy as the "only fossil fueled carrier in comission". I've heard this about five times on FNC and it annoys me every time. What about the two non-nuclear Kitty Hawk class ships, Kitty Hawk and Constellation? Both are still in comission (although they'll probably be retired within the next ten years). The Kennedy is a modified version of the Kitty Hawks.

This is not some big secret or esoteric bit of knowledge that Fox would have to spend endless hours researching. It's one of the most basic aspects of the US Navy's carrier fleet. Irritating.

Fox and facts have very little to do with each other.

That's pretty sad. Usually the TV channel is more reliable -- the website has always been a joke, though.

But, on the plus side, they do have a passel of long legged news babes. That's some good reporting there ladies!

There was the oil-burning America CV-66, launched after the nuclear Enterprise, but it was decommisioned a few years back.

Yup. The America is another Kitty Hawk class. Unfortunately, when she was retired in '96 she was found to be in too poor of shape to keep in reserve. However, the even older Forrestal class Ranger and Independence, which were decommissioned in '93 and '98 respectively, are in reserve in NS Bremerton (although the Ranger is in bad shape). The Independence could probably be restored to active duty within months in an emergency.
