Ship Naming Fun
Interesting little tidbit, the Navy has decided to name the next Nimitz class carrier, the currently under construction CVN 77, after George Bush Sr. Me thinks some pentagon folks are brown nosing Jr somethin' awful.
Anyways, I'm down with presidents and all, but why can't we name these ships after battles, or glorious old ships like we used to back in the Good Old Days™. You know, like Saratoga, Yorktown, Lexington, or Intrepid. Cool ship names that have history behind them, and that aren't being used anymore. Right now Kitty Hawk, Constellation, and Enterprise are the last big boys with cool non-person names, and KH and Connie will both be decommisioned within the next 10 years. Sad really.

This sounds just like where I live now; San Jose, CA.
Somehow, the government idiots in this area just can't seem to wait until someone is DEAD before putting that person's name on something.
We have:
- McEnery Convention Center (after former mayor Tom McEnery, who is still alive)
- Diridon Station (after former county supervisor Rod Diridon, still kicking)
- San Jose Airport, aka "Mineta" International (after our beloved Transportation Secretary and also a former mayor)
- And U.S. 101 south of Bernal Rs. is known as "Sig Sanchez Freeway" (former supervisor Sig Sanchez, also still kicking)
There's probably a few more that I'm not aware of.
Every class of ship gets a different naming
convention. Not sure what the rule of thumb for
carriers is - apparently there isn't one.
SSN - Los Angeles class... all named for cities
SSBN - Ohio - all named for states
LHA/LHD - battles with marines (tarawa, belleau
wood etc)
I was on an LSD - 41 class, not sure what the
convention there was - many had civil war names,
but some had other battles (pearl harbor, whidbey
island)
In other words... who knows.
Well, judging from the last 8 or so carriers, I think the convention for the Nimitz class CVNs is either presidents or bigwig navy guys, but mostly presidents.
CVN 69 - Dwight D. Eisenhower
CVN 71 - Theodore Roosevelt
CVN 72 - Abraham Lincoln
CVN 73 - George Washington
CVN 75 - Harry S Truman
CVN 76 - Ronald Reagan
CVN 77 - George H.W. Bush
You know what's also annoying? Military operations always have really cheesy names nowadays. They sound like lame Tom Clancy knock-offs: Urgent Fury, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom (it sucks, sorry), etc.
Back in the day they had cool names like D-Day and Overlord and Torch.
enduring freedom may have extremely sucked, but desert storm was really badass
