LMX
On the advice of blog-pal Lexington Green (of Chicago Boyz fame), I went out and purchased the latest Lisa Marr Experiment CD, 4 AM.
As usual, following the musical advice of Lex has brought me great joy. After only a few listens, I know this is going to be one of my summer favorites. An eclectic mix of neo-country and alternapop, with hints of honky-tonk, rockabilly, other other various mismatched musical styles (there’s a Billie Holiday cover fer chrissakes), it serves as the perfect backdrop for those long, warm, weird summer evenings, drinking bourbon out on the deck.

Captain, all you say is true about the eclecticism. And even so, you left out the fact that the thing is saturated with Velvet Underground references, both lyrical and musical. And there is the one song that reminds me of Dusty Springfield. And a direct Johnny Cash quote. And it goes on like that. The record is beyond eclectic, it is an insanely over-ambitious attempt to encapsulate 50 years of American music in one mighty gulp. Make no small plans, indeed. (to lift a quote from ChicagoBoy Daniel Burnham)
And, then, the lyrics sink in about the emptiness of sacrificing love for ambition, and carrying on with a smile, broken heart be damned. And a sort of grudging love/hate relationship with America. And then you notice certain dark (Faustian?) subtexts. But throughout a sense of sanity and honesty and humor.
And holding it all together: that voice. The voice of the age if the age but knew it.
(And Sherri is a pretty dang good drummer --though I know you have given your heart forever to Tory Castellano. I feel kinda the same way about Sandy West, to say nothing about Bun E. Carlos, Jerry Nolan, or "Careful" Mike Quaglia, because I'm OLD.)
Yeah, bourbon, on the deck. Gotta get the kids into bed first, though.
Does anyone know what Mike Quaglia is doing these days? How about the reason he left the Hoods? God damn but he was solid.
