Sleater-Kinney - One Beat, Kill Rock Stars Records
Some people think of women musicians as the bubble gum pop of Vanessa Carlton and Lisa Loeb or as the teen pop of Brittany Spears and Pink. Of course, there are others that make serious rock and roll. Sleater-Kinney’s latest album, One Beat, is proof that sex doesn’t really matter when it comes to really rocking out.
The Portland, Oregon, trio comes from the same scene that’s spawned countless other indie punk-rock bands. Sounding like a Ramones’ fan club gone wild, the punk attitude blends well with the sexy whines of Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. “Oh!,” “One Beat” and “Combat Rock” are irresistible with super-catchy melodies and guitar-work. The lyrics alone leave a lasting impression. It’s hard to find writing this good in any other punk album.
Next time someone complains about the record industry not giving serious women rockers a chance, point to Sleater-Kinney’s amazing album to shut them up. (Jason Janik)
Yanked – Demo
From Longview, Texas comes an oi sound sans mohawks and spikes. A very high-energy release featuring songs such as “Chupacabra” (say that five times fast) and “A Goddamn Pity,” this CD jumps out of the player and puts you in the mosh pit. It’s fast, it’s furious and it doesn’t let up. The band has been paying their dues locally in Longview but are starting to branch out into other areas of Texas with an upcoming show at Eisenbergs in Plano. Not too pop to turn off the pop-punk haters, but not too heavy to turn off the hard-core punk haters. Yanked strikes an irresistible balance you have to hear for yourself. (John Binder)
